The "Success Illustion"

Social media is a master of the "final reveal." We scroll through feeds filled with pristine canvases, perfectly cured resin, and flawless brushwork. But here’s the secret: we don't see the mistakes.

When you look at a finished project, you’re seeing the victory lap. You aren't seeing the three prototypes that ended up in the trash, the colors that muddied into a dull gray, or the "innovative" idea that turned into an awkward, sticky disaster.

The Hidden Ratio
For every piece of work shared with the world, there is a mountain of "yuckiness" behind it. We all deal with:

• The Ugly Duckling Phase: That mid-project moment where everything looks terrible and you’re tempted to walk away.
• The Literal Fails: The cracked clay, the bleeding ink, or the heat-curing session that didn't go quite as planned.
• The Creative "Ugh": Projects that are technically fine but just feel off.

Give Yourself Permission to Fail. We tend to be our own harshest critics because we compare our "behind-the-scenes" footage to everyone else’s "highlight reel." This creates a cycle of pressure that can actually stifle creativity. If you’re afraid to make something ugly, you’ll never take the risks necessary to make something beautiful. We are all struggling with the same learning curves. Whether you are a seasoned professional or picking up a brush for the first time, trial and error is the only way forward.

The Challenge: Next time you’re working on something and it goes sideways, don't hide it. Take a breath, realize it’s just a stepping stone, and give yourself permission to be "in progress." Let’s start being as proud of our mistakes as we are of our masterpieces—because one cannot exist without the other.
